ECoR logs 18% rise in passenger earnings during first six months of FY 2026-27

BHUBANESWAR: East Coast Railway (ECoR) has recorded substantial growth in passenger earnings during the first six months of the 2026-27 financial year, with revenue increasing by 18.01 per cent compared to the corresponding period last year.

Passenger bookings also registered a growth of 1.76 per cent during April-September 2026, reflecting sustained demand for rail travel.

According to the ECoR, passenger earnings reached Rs 1,079.30 crore up to September 2026, compared with Rs 914.62 crore during the corresponding period last year, highlighting the strong performance of passenger services.

The growth in passenger earnings significantly outpaced the increase in passenger bookings, indicating higher average earnings per passenger. Average earnings per passenger increased from approximately Rs 240 to Rs 278, registering a rise of around 16 per cent.

The ECoR stated this growth was supported by greater patronage of AC and premium train services, including Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat trains, along with introduction of new services, extension of existing trains and augmentation of coaches on popular routes.

“Special trains operated during festive and holiday seasons further helped cater to additional passenger demand,” it said and added that steady patronage on tourism and pilgrimage routes and the wider use of digital ticketing facilities also contributed to the overall performance.

All divisions contributed to the growth in passenger earnings. Khurda Road Division recorded earnings of Rs 744.96 crore, registering an increase of 18.68 per cent over the previous year.

Sambalpur Division earned Rs 133.76 crore, marking a growth of 12.78 per cent while Rayagada Division recorded Rs 53.10 crore, registering an increase of 24.41 per cent. The consolidated figures also include the performance of the erstwhile Waltair Division for April and May 2026.

Passenger bookings across ECoR stood at 3.877 crore up to September 2026, as compared to 3.81 crore during the corresponding period last year, registering a growth of 1.76 per cent.

Similarly, ticket checking activities also contributed to passenger revenue. Up to September 30, 2026, ECoR registered 5.15 lakh cases of ticketless and irregular travel and realised Rs 36.21 crore. Earnings from ticket checking increased by 27.28 per cent compared to the corresponding period last year.

ABVP and BCJD supporters clash at Utkal University ahead of campus polls

BHUBANESWAR: A clash broke out between members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD) at Utkal University on Wednesday, minutes before a ‘Why I Stand For’ meeting, a day ahead of the students’ union elections.

Police sources said an altercation escalated into a scuffle, with members of both groups allegedly hurling chairs at one another inside the university’s convocation hall. Two students sustained minor injuries in the incident.

The BCJD alleged that its members were targeted during the programme. “Students supporting us were attacked. They are also being threatened in the hostels and forced to vote for our rival party’s candidate,” a BCJD member alleged.

ABVP members refuted the allegations, claiming that BCJD supporters had attacked them. A fourth-year student was assaulted by BCJD supporters and sustained injuries, the student outfit alleged.

Sources said several outsiders were present on the campus earlier in the day and were involved in the violence. Both groups accused each other of bringing outsiders onto the campus and attacking their members.

Bhubaneswar DCP Saravana Vivek M and other senior police officers rushed to the university to defuse the tension. “Two students sustained minor injuries in the incident. The situation is under control, and police deployment is in place to prevent any untoward incident,” Saravana said.

Vice-Chancellor of Utkal University Prof Chandi Prasad Nanda, in the presence of the DCP, held a meeting with representatives and candidates of various student organisations to ensure that the elections pass off peacefully.

Saudi Arabia extends suspension of operations at Riyadh airport till safety measures completed

Saudi Arabia has extended the suspension of operations at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh as authorities continue safety inspections following deadly attacks over the weekend. Saudi Arabia also reported a fresh threat involving drones and cruise missiles on Monday.

The General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) said the suspension would remain in place while procedures to verify the safety and operational readiness of airport facilities were completed in coordination with the relevant authorities. The extension follows attacks on the airport on October 10 and 11 that killed 14 people and injured hundreds, disrupting air travel and prompting airlines to cancel or suspend services to Saudi Arabia. Several international carriers announced further flight suspensions on Monday, adding to travel disruption across the region.

Major General Turki Al-Malki, official spokesman for the Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen, said a threat involving drones and cruise missiles against Saudi Arabia had been detected and tracked and was being dealt with. Earlier in the day, the Coalition had posted that a ballistic missile launched towards Khamis Mushait had been intercepted and destroyed.

The Indian Embassy in Riyadh said the family of Mohammed Yousuf Ali, an Indian national who died in the October 10 attack, had decided to hold his funeral in Riyadh. The mission said it was assisting the family with the required formalities. In an update posted on social media, the embassy said three injured Indian nationals remained in intensive care and two more had been admitted to the ICU. Two others were in regular hospital wards, while the remaining injured nationals had been discharged. Embassy officials had visited hospitals treating injured nationals, and the mission said it remained in contact with their families and was providing assistance.

CJP's Saurav Das, Ashutosh Ranka Jump Jantar Mantar Gate To Protest, Detained

A day after Centre denotified Jantar Mantar as a protest site, a bunch of Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) volunteers led by its leaders Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das landed at the site early on Tuesday morning.

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke posted a video of a flash protest at Jantar Mantar where CJP volunteers were seen climbing an iron gate and a police barricade to reach Jantar Mantar to protest.

The protesters were later detained by the Delhi Police, Dipke said in his post.

In the video of the protest, CJP leader Ranka and Das alongwith a few volunteers can be seen jumping a gate with flags in their hands and entering the area to stage a protest. The group raised slogans as they were chased by the police who were stationed there. The protesters had a little run in with cops who tried to stop them while they raised Bharat Mata Ki Jai and Inquilab Zindabaad slogans. The protesters were later detained and taken away.

"You cannot denotify the resistance," a defiant Dipke posted challenging the Centre's order to denotify Jantar Mantar as a protest site.

Reacting to the Jantar Mantar denotification, Dipke said that Jantar Mantars will now emerge across the country.

"PM's fear is evident from the fact that he has removed Jantar Mantar as a designated protest site. He thinks protests will stop if Jantar Mantar is no longer a designated protest site, but that is not going to happen. Jantar Mantars will now emerge across the country," he said.

Jantar Mantar in the high-security central Delhi area, which so far had served as a designated protest site, will no longer be used for this purpose.

Three new locations have been finalised as designated sites for protests and sit-ins in the national capital based on recommendations of a committee under the Union Home Ministry.

The three new protest venues are: Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground and CBD Ground in east Delhi.

The development came amid protests by the Opposition bloc INDIA and the CJP in central Delhi against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the special intensive revision (SIR) controversy.

Delhi Police has since October 10 fortified Jantar Mantar and has not allowed protesters to enter the area. The CJP had given a protest call at Jantar Mantar on October 10. It's top leader Dipke, Das and Ranka were detained from inside their flight as they landed in Delhi on October 10 morning. Thousands of protesters have been detained over Saturday and Sunday as Capital streets witnessed scenes of protests and crackdown.
